We are now ready to implement database cleanups on a weekly basis, after having dealt with the huge backlog of invalid domain name holders this summer.

This is the new routine

When an organization is deleted from The Central Coordinating Register for Legal Entities (Enhetsregisteret), we receive the update the next day. We maintain a list of domain name holders that have been deleted from the register on the registrar web, on the "Daily" tab, under the headline "Trouble lists". The list in question is marked "Organizations no longer registered in Brønnøysund". In the column "Earliest delete start" you can see the earliest possible date for when Norid can start the notification and deletion process. The list is updated daily.

There is a 60-day grace period after the organization is deleted from the Enhetsregisteret before we start the deletion process. During this period, you can check you lists on the registrar web and help your customers transfer their domains, thus removing the need for a notification from Norid.

The cleanup routine will start once per week, on Thursdays. Deactivation of domains will happen on Monday mornings. There will be no deactivation or deletion of domains during the Christmas and Easter holiday seasons.

The deletion process step by step

  • The deletion process starts a minimum of 60 days after the domain holder is deleted from the Enhetsregisteret. Norid sends the notification via email to the legal contact person for each domain, and the registrar receives an EPP service message for each domain.
  • 30 days after the initial notification, Norid sends a letter to the legal contact person for the domain.
  • 60 days after the initial notification, the domain is removed from the DNS and stops working.
  • 90 days after the initial notification, the domain is deleted and becomes available for registration.

To see which domains that are in the process of being deleted, log on to the registrar web and check the status file named Domains registered under regXXX for which an invalid-registrant process is running" on the "Daily" tab. This list is updated daily.

The first regular cleanup starts on 29 November

We start the new routine on Thursday 29 November. Some 2500 domains will be affected. This includes domains that were involved in this summers cleanup, that were granted a temporary grace period, and domains registered to organizations deleted from the Enhetsregisteret after mid June 2012.
