Until now, KS has administered kommune.no and herad.no, where about 500 domains associated with municipalities and county authorities are registered. As of 23 May Norid will undertake this responsibility in agreement with KS.

On Tuesday 23 May, the municipal domains and the registered information of the domain holders will be transferred to Norid’s domain register. Initially, each municipality's chief municipal executive (rådmann) will be registered as admin contact for their
domain. The renewal date for the domains will be set to 22 May 2018.

When Norid takes over, all the domains under kommune.no and herad.no will be subject to the Domain name policy for .no. This means, among other things, that each domain has
to be associated with a registrar, and the municipality must accept the terms of the domain name policy.

You can read the formal policy update here.

Follow-up after 23 May

Registrars that are already responsible for municipal domain names must contact their customers and collect an applicant declaration. The registrar must also check that the registered information for the domains is correct. The registrar then transfers
the domain from REG999998-NORID, adds applicant declaration data, and corrects contacts information when necessary.

Many very important services are run on domains under kommune.no and herad.no, and Norid consider it to be a serious breach if registrars take over domains without this being cleared with the municipal.

On 28 August 2017 Norid will contact all municipals with domains that are still not associated with a registrar, and ask them to find one.
