Following the conversion to the new data model, there is some data cleanup required. Some 130 000 domains still have a physical person as the technical contact (tech-c), and these must be updated with a role tech-c.

When we converted the data this spring, the following changes were done for technical contacts:

  • Name servers: persons contacts were deleted
  • Delegations that had both person and role as technical contacts: The person contact was deleted
  • Delegations that only had a person as technical contact: These were not converted

We now ask that the registrars deal with their portfolios and update domains that still have a person as tech-c. The deadline is 15 October 2018.

After this deadline, we will start deletion processes for the domains that still do not have a valid technical contact. The process will follow the same pattern as our automated deletion processes: A total of 90 days, where an e-mail warning is sent on day 0 and day 14, a letter on day 30, deactivating the domain on day 60 and deletion from the database on day 90.

How can I find which domains are in need of an update?

  • Log on to the registrar web
  • Go to the "Daily" tab
  • Download the file labeled "Full dump of regXXX's whois objects" (number three from the top)
  • Use a suitable program to list the domains that have a technical contact with "Tech-c Handle" on the format xxxP-NORID
  • You now have a list of the domains that need a new tech-c

The whois dump file is uploaded daily, so you can check a day or two later to see if you managed to update all the affected domains.

What is the simplest way to do these updates?

This depends on the individual registrar's systems and processes, so that is ultimately up to you. For those of you who use our online EPP Client, and have one single tech-c for all or most of the domains you administer, the simplest method is a bulk update:

  • Log onto the EPP Client
  • Go to the Domain Bulk tab
  • Enter the list of domains you want to update
  • Enter the handle of the new tech-c
  • Click "SetTech"
